San Gorgonio Wilderness Trails
(UNDER CONSTRUCTION)
The San Gorgonio Wilderness is located in Southern
California in the San Bernardino mountains to the east of Los Angeles. It covers
more than 50,000 acres and provides many fine opportunities for hiking and
backpacking. The panoramas in this collection provide a sampling of the views
found along the main trails of the wilderness. Besides capturing some of the
beauty of the area, they are also intended as an aid to trip planning. Along
those lines, mileages and elevation changes are provided for the various
routes of travel. Information on campsite locations and whether water is
usually available is also listed. Water is a critical issue when traveling in
the wilderness so the current status of any water source mentioned here
should be checked before relying on it. A good source of information is the
website of the San Gorgonio Wilderness
Association, and in particular, their weather and trail conditions page.
Another important source of information and trip permits is the Mill Creek Ranger
Station:
MILL CREEK RANGER STATION
34701 Mill Creek Rd.
Mentone, CA 92359
(909) 382-2882
The panoramas can either be accessed by clicking on one of the individual
trails listed below or interactively using a map of the wilderness. The map
is provided in two different formats: one, a normal “flat” format and the
other, a format more suitable for viewing with a VR headset. Note that when
viewing one of the panoramas, you can jump to another view either by using
one of the “hotspots” or by clicking on the “next panorama” button.
Acknowledgements: Much of the mileage, elevation, water source, and campsite
information provided below was taken from the “wilderness
mileage” page of the San Gorgonio Wilderness Association’s website. Additional mileage measurements and
elevation information were obtained using CALTOPO and Hikin’ Jim’s interactive
map of the San Gorgonio Wilderness.

San Gorgonio
Wilderness Map (VR version)
If you are going to use a
head-mounted display to view the panoramas, this VR-friendly version of the
map will allow you to interactively access the panoramas. In non-VR mode,
the hotspots are marked by small white circles. In VR mode, the hotspots
are shown by small floating globes that expand in size when targeted with a
pointing device. Note that VR-mode can also be accessed when the panoramas
are viewed for one of the specific trails listed below.

The South Fork
Trail
70 panoramas
The South Fork
trail starts on the north side of the wilderness and runs from the
trailhead’s paved parking area on Jenks Lake Road to South Fork Meadows.
Along the way it passes historic Horse Meadows and an overlook at the old
Poopout Hill trailhead. The streams at South Fork Meadow typically run all
season long but camping is not allowed there. The area the trail passes
through was heavily affected by the 2015 Lake Fire. To get an idea of its
severity, take a look at the “before” picture that’s available in the
Poopout Hill panorama by clicking on the small icon next to the wilderness
sign.

The Dry Lake
Trail
22 panoramas
The Dry Lake trail
climbs from South Fork Meadows to Dry Lake, which, despite its name, often
has water in it. Campsites can be found just to the east of the lake. Water
is available from nearby Lodgepole Springs which, like the lake, may run
dry late in the season. Beyond the lake, the Dry Lake Trail continues up to
the junction with the Sky High trail and Fish Creek trail at Mineshaft
Saddle. Along the way the trail passes dry campsites at Trail Flats.

The Dollar Lake
Trail
21 panoramas
The Dollar Lake trail
climbs from South Fork Meadows to a junction with a side trail that
descends to Dollar Lake. At the time the panoramas were taken, the junction
was not signed but is very distinct and difficult to miss. Campsites can be
found to the north of the lake. Water is available from a spring at the
west end of the lake, which may run dry as the season progresses. Beyond
the junction with the side-trail to the lake, the Dollar Lake Trail
continues up to the junction with the San Bernardino Peak Divide trail at
Dollar Lake Saddle. The Peak Divide Trail can then be taken to the summit
of Mt. San Gorgonio.

The Vivian Creek
Trail
33 panoramas
The Vivian Creek Trail enters the
wilderness from its south side. The trailhead is located near Forest Falls
and is reached by a fully paved road. One of the wilderness’ busiest
trails, it offers the shortest distance to the summit of San Gorgonio, but
at the cost of a significant elevation change. Several trail camps are
found along the way to the peak, including the Vivian Creek Trail Camp, the
Halfway Trail Camp, and the High Creek Trail Camp. Near the summit, the
trail meets the San Bernardino Peak Trail and the Sky High Trail.

The Fish Creek
Trail
15 panoramas
Located off Highway 38 near the Heart Bar
campground, the Fish Creek trailhead is reached by a 7 mile stretch of dirt
roads (1N02 and 1N05) that can be badly rutted and rocky in places. The
rough ride is rewarded by a trailhead elevation of over 8,000’, the highest
of any of the wilderness access points. Entering on the east side, the
trail climbs over Fish Creek Saddle and then on to Mineshaft Saddle, where
it meets the Dry Lake and Sky High Trails. Along the way, it passes
campsites at the Fish Creek trail Camp.

The Aspen Grove
Trail
23 panoramas
Located off Highway 38 near the Heart
Bar campground, the Aspen Grove trailhead is reached by a short (about 2.3 miles) stretch of dirt roads (1N02 and 1N05) that
are usually in good condition and easily traversable. (Note that 1N05
continues on to the Fish Creek trailhead, getting considerable rougher
along the way). The Aspen Grove Trail descends from the trailhead into a
grove of Quaking Aspens, one of the only two groves found outside of the
Sierras. Unfortunately, the area was severely burned by the 2015 Lake Fire.
Although little above the surface survived, aspen roots are hardy and the
grove is in the process of regenerating itself. Beyond the grove, the tail
continues south-east along Fish Creek to meet the Fish Creek Trail.

The San
Bernardino Peak Trail
17 panoramas
This trail enters the wilderness
from its western end, just off Highway 38 in Angeles Oaks. The trailhead is
reached by a short (about .3 mile) dirt road that can
be quite rough in places. Not far from the trailhead is a plaque honoring
the historic 1852
Washington Survey. The actual survey marker is much higher up the
trail, just below San Bernardino Peak. The trail ascends through a series
of switchbacks and then runs along the top of a ridge through thick stands
of manzanita. At Manzanita Flats, a side-trail to the right descends to the
Columbine Springs Trail Camp. Another side-trail to the left descends to
Johns Meadow. The main trail continues upwards to San Bernardino Peak,
passing the Limber Pine Bench Trail Camp along the way. At the summit, the
trail continues east as the San Bernardino Peak Divide Trail.

The Forsee Creek
Trail
12 panoramas
The Forsee Creek Trail
starts on the north side of the wilderness. It is reached by taking the
Jenks Lake Road off Highway 38 to a half-mile dirt road (1N82) that leads
down to the trailhead. Be warned that the road is very rough in places. As
the trail ascends south into the wilderness, it soon meets the junction
with the Johns Meadow Trail. It then continues on to a trail camp at
Jackstraw Springs and finally the junction with the San Bernardino Peak
Divide Trail. The Trail Fork Springs trail camp is located near the junction.

The Johns Meadow
Trail
3 panoramas
The Johns Meadow Trail
forks off the Forsee Creek Trail not far from the trailhead. It traverses
in a generally westerly direction until finally descending south-westerly
to a crossing of Forsee Creek. The Johns Meadow Trail Camp is located just
a little further along the trail. From the trail camp, an intermittently
maintained extension of the trail ascends to Manzanita Flats where it meets
the San Bernardino Peak Trail.

The Momyer,
Alger, and Falls Creek Trails
16 panoramas
The Momyer (MO-meyer)
Trail enters the wilderness from its south side. The trailhead is located
near Forest Falls and is reached by a fully paved road. Like the Vivian
Creek Trail, it ascends steeply as it makes its run up to Dollar lake
Saddle, where it meets the Dollar Lake Trail and the San Bernardino Peak
Divide Trail, which continues on to Mt. San Gorgonio. Note that the Momyer
Creek Trail becomes the Alger Creek Trail as it wraps around that drainage
and then the Falls Creek Trail as it ascends that canyon. Camping spots
include the Alger Creek Trail Camp, the Dobbs Cabin Trail Camp, and the
Saxton Trail Camp.

The Lost Creek
Trail
19 panoramas
The Lost Creek Trailhead
is located off Highway 38 near the South Fork campground on the northern
side of the wilderness. It ascends the slopes of Grinnell Mountain to the
Grinnell Ridge trail camp. Further on, it meets the South Fork trail just
below South Fork Meadows. The area was ravaged by the 2015 Lake Fire and,
at the time of this writing (autumn 2021), only about the first two and a
half miles of the trail have been rebuilt. The rest of the trail is blocked
by overgrowth and fallen trees.
